Everything your lawn needs from September through November. Fall is the most productive season for lawn improvement.
Fall is when the real work happens. While most homeowners put their lawns on autopilot after summer, experienced lawn owners know that September through November is the most important window of the year.
Cool-season grasses enter their peak growth period in the fall. Roots grow aggressively, weed competition drops, and the soil is still warm enough for seed germination. This is your best opportunity to aerate, overseed, fertilize, and repair damage from the summer.
Follow this month-by-month checklist to maximize fall and send your lawn into winter in the strongest condition possible.
Core aerate the lawn
Fall aeration is the single best thing you can do for a cool-season lawn. It relieves compaction and prepares the soil for overseeding and fertilizer.
Overseed thin and bare areas
Immediately after aerating, spread grass seed over thin spots. Soil temps in the 50โ65ยฐF range are ideal for cool-season seed germination.
Apply fall fertilizer
Use a nitrogen-rich fertilizer to promote root growth before winter. This is the most important fertilizer application of the year.
Continue mowing at 3โ3.5 inches
Keep your regular mowing height through September. Grass is still actively growing and needs consistent cutting.
Address broadleaf weeds
Fall is the best time to kill dandelions, clover, and other broadleaf weeds. They are actively pulling nutrients into their roots, so herbicide is most effective now.
Keep up with leaf removal
Do not let leaves sit on the lawn for more than a few days. A thick layer blocks sunlight and traps moisture, promoting disease.
Apply winterizer fertilizer
A late-season winterizer (high potassium) strengthens cell walls and helps the lawn survive freeze-thaw cycles. Apply 4โ6 weeks after your fall fertilizer.
Keep watering if rain is scarce
Your lawn still needs about 1 inch of water per week through October. Do not assume it can rely on rainfall alone.
Lower mowing height gradually
Begin reducing your mowing height by half an inch at a time. By the last mow, cool-season grass should be about 2.5 inches tall.
Apply lime if soil test indicates
If your soil pH is below 6.0, apply pelletized lime in fall. It takes months to adjust pH, so fall application sets you up for spring.
Final mow of the season
Cut the lawn to about 2.5 inches. Grass left too tall can mat down under snow and invite snow mold. Grass cut too short exposes roots to cold.
Clean up all remaining leaves
Do a final thorough leaf cleanup. Any leaves left on the lawn over winter will smother the grass and create dead spots.
Winterize your mower
Drain or stabilize the fuel, change the oil, clean the deck, and sharpen the blade. A properly stored mower starts easier in spring.
Drain and blow out irrigation
Shut off the water supply to your sprinkler system and blow out the lines with compressed air to prevent freeze damage.
Mark lawn edges and obstacles
Place stakes along driveways, sidewalks, and garden bed edges so snow plows and shovels do not damage your lawn borders.

Aerate before you overseed. Core aeration creates thousands of small holes that give grass seed direct contact with soil. Seed dropped onto a freshly aerated lawn germinates faster and establishes stronger roots than seed broadcast on the surface alone.
Do not skip the winterizer. The final fertilizer application of the year is the most important one. Winterizer fertilizer feeds root development during the last weeks of growth and stores energy reserves that fuel a faster, greener spring green-up.
Measure before you buy. Fertilizer, seed, and lime are all applied per 1,000 square feet. If you do not know your actual lawn area, you are guessing. Use LotSite to measure your grass area and buy exactly what you need.
Tackle leaves early and often. Waiting until all the leaves have fallen is a mistake. A thick blanket of leaves can kill grass in just a couple of weeks. Blow or rake them off every few days during peak leaf drop.
